Chair Message:
Greetings and welcome! The Department of Wildlife, Fish, & Conservation Biology is well into its 4th decade of existence, and the Major even older (it started before the department was formally recognized). Recently we initiated a Minor program of study as well, to maximize the number of people we can contact with “our message.” As the only program of study within the University of California to focus on the biology, ecology, and conservation of wild vertebrates, we are looking for students interested in immersing themselves in the integration of natural history and applied management, within the conceptual framework of ecological theory. Even to those of us in the field, it’s occasionally surprising how great a field of endeavor this is! Come on aboard and join us.
Our faculty are diverse and pursue research in North and South America as well as Africa. Additionally, most of us have active research programs in California, addressing issues facing the state as it continues to expand its economy and population. We have two student clubs (great student discounts!) that are sponsored by the largest national professional organizations in the fields of wildlife biology (The Wildlife Society) and fish and fisheries biology (American Fisheries Society). We emphasize hands-on training and typically have relatively small classes to maximize opportunities for students and faculty to interact. Our faculty are actively involved in advising as well, so students can expect to develop a personal relationship with the faculty, which we have found helpful when students have questions on their program of study or on career options.
If you ever thought that vacationing in “the great outdoors” was fun, then consider a career where you get paid to be out there. It simply doesn’t get much better than this.
